President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by Farzana Sadiq, Minister of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Co-Chair of the Azerbaijan-Iran Joint Intergovernmental Commission for Economic Cooperation.During the conversation, Farzana Sadiq’s visit to our country last year and her meeting with President Ilham Aliyev were recalled with satisfaction.
The Head of State recalled his recent telephone conversation with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, and said that during that telephone conversation, issues of mutual cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran as friendly countries were discussed. Noting with satisfaction the expansion of the bilateral agenda, President Ilham Aliyev stressed that the projects jointly implemented by Azerbaijan and Iran will open up wide opportunities for both our countries and the region. The Head of State expressed hope that all these issues will be discussed within the framework of Farzana Sadiq’s visit to our country and that the visit will have good results.
Expressing her satisfaction with returning to Azerbaijan, Farzana Sadiq thanked the head of state for the reception. He conveyed the greetings of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, to the head of state and emphasized that the Iranian President attaches special importance to relations with Azerbaijan. The Head of State expressed gratitude for the greetings and asked to convey his greetings to Masud Pezeshkian. Farzana Sadiq emphasized the existence of historical, religious and cultural ties between our countries.
During the conversation, the importance of the 17th meeting of the “State Commission on Cooperation in the Economic, Trade and Humanitarian Fields between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran” to be held in Baku was touched upon, the North-South transport corridor, the construction of a road bridge connecting the Aghband and Kalale settlements on the Araz River, and other issues of mutual interest were discussed. Besides, Iran holds discussions on electricity imports from Russia via Azerbaijan, Mostafa Barzegar, Director General of Europe, America, and CIS Countries Department at the Iranian Oil Ministry, told local media.
According to him, these discussions are expected to result in strengthening cooperation in other areas as well. Barzegar said that negotiations are also underway on Iran’s gas imports from Russia. If a full agreement is reached on the negotiations, 55 billion cubic meters of gas will be imported from Russia per year in the first stage. The official added that this figure is planned to be increased by 55 billion more cubic meters per year in the next stage. The project to create a North-South energy corridor between Iran, Azerbaijan, and Russia is underway. The goal is to synchronize the power grids of the three countries.
The necessary design work for this project is being carried out by the Iranian Monenko company. On June 26, 2024, a document was signed between Majid Chegeni, the CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company, and Alexei Miller, Executive Director of the Russian Gazprom Company, on the transportation of Russian gas to Iran.
