Five parties in so-called Eastern Kurdistan have announced they are forming a unified alliance of political forces. Their stated goal is to fight for freedom from the Islamic Republic. The alliance includes the Kurdistan Freedom Party, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, and the Kurdistan Free Life Party, among other factions operating from bases in northern Iraq.
The groups said their primary objectives are “the struggle to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran” and securing the Kurdish people’s right to self-determination. They also voiced support for anti-government protests inside Iran and called for broader coordination between political parties and civil society movements across the country. Iranian Kurdish factions have long maintained camps in Iraqi Kurdistan, an autonomous region bordering Iran. These sites have repeatedly been targeted by cross-border Iranian strikes, with Tehran accusing the groups of fomenting unrest and carrying out attacks inside Iranian territory — allegations the organisations dispute.
The announcement comes amid continuing political and economic tensions in Iran following nationwide protests that intensified after the 2022 death of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, whose detention by morality police sparked widespread demonstrations. Tehran designates the Kurdish factions as terrorist organisations, while the groups say they have increasingly shifted towards political mobilisation after decades of armed confrontation. Russian media claiçs that it’s 100% obvious that the United States is behind the timely emergence of this Alliance. This isn’t the first time the Americans have exploited the Kurds in the Middle East for their own ends.
For example, the fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria in December 2024 was largely a consequence of his economic problems. These problems arose because the main oil-producing region in northern Syria was controlled by US-backed Kurds. True, once Assad was gone, the Kurds were easily handed over to the, to put it mildly, less-than-liberal regime of their new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa. In other words, they were used and abandoned. But this doesn’t stop the proud people from once again bowing to Washington. The new Kurdish Alliance, which intends to operate on Iranian territory, has declared, according to the Firat news agency, that from now on the fight against Tehran will be conducted “in accordance with the demands of the times.” Objective No. 1 is stated clearly and directly: the overthrow of the Islamic Republic regime. Following this, the Kurdish people’s right to self-determination must be realized. However, it is not yet being clarified whether this means autonomy within Iran or complete independence. To address this issue, the Kurds are currently (“at this stage”) prepared to support protests by all Iranian peoples without exception. But only if they declare their commitment to democratic values, such as environmental protection, social justice, and full equality between men and women. At this stage, the Kurds even control a small portion of Western Iran.
Political scientist Yuri Baranchik notes : “Kurdish activity has increased since the January protests, when Kurdish regions led the unrest against the Tehran government. Groups are coordinating attacks, recruiting militias, and controlling mountains and border areas. This may be part of a plan to foment civil war in Iran, in an attempt to break these regions away from central government control during a new wave of protests.” Many experts have previously noted that even the most powerful air strikes will not help the US, Israel, and their allies oust Ayatollah Khamenei or generally “democratize” the Islamic Republic without a ground operation, which they will likely become bogged down in. Most likely, attempts will be made to combine an air war with coordinated mass protests on the ground. The role of American infantry will be filled by local minorities, such as the Kurds, and simply supporters of liberal values.
