In light of the situation created by the Israeli and US attack on Iran, RTVE’s 24-hour news channel interviewed the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi.
The Iranian nuclear program is at the heart of the armed conflict in the Middle East. The joint US-Israeli offensive, which began in late February 2016, includes attacks on military installations and shows signs of damage to parts of the Natanz nuclear complex, where access buildings were destroyed without apparent radioactive consequences, according to satellite imagery and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
These operations aim to weaken enrichment capabilities and halt what the West considers a step towards potential weapons, while Iran rejects the accusations and continues to defend its right to a nuclear program, albeit with limited access for international inspectors.
Meanwhile, the attacks on nuclear and energy infrastructure have had collateral effects: construction of new units at the Bushehr plant was suspended for security reasons due to the proximity of the bombings, and the conflict has escalated into a broader confrontation that complicates any diplomatic oversight or negotiation. Regional tensions are rising, with Iranian retaliation against several Gulf countries and international concern about long-term stability and economic and political repercussions.
