Sri Lanka’s opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has accused the government of withholding key information about a reported torpedo attack on an Iranian warship near the island’s waters. Speaking in parliament in Colombo, Premadasa said the government had not clarified whether the incident occurred within Sri Lanka’s territorial waters or its Exclusive Economic Zone. The Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was reportedly sunk by a United States submarine about 40 nautical miles south of the island. The Sri Lanka Navy launched a rescue operation, recovering bodies and rescuing several sailors from the sea. The vessel had around 180 crew members onboard and was returning from a multinational naval exercise in India when it was struck. The incident comes amid escalating tensions after the United States and Israel launched military operations against Iran, further raising regional security concerns.
