US President Donald Trump says five members of the Iranian women’s football team have been ‘taken care of’ in their bid to seek asylum in Australia. The US leader claims to have warned Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that it would be a ‘terrible mistake’ to allow them to return home as the war in the Middle East rages. Amnesty International have raised concerns the players could be persecuted upon their return after they refused to sing the national anthem before their opening match in the 2026 Asian Cup.
