Donald Trump increased the pressure on Iran on Wednesday with new threats of bombings, as hopes were rekindled for a resumption of negotiations between the two sides to end the war in the Middle East.
“If Iran agrees to give what has been agreed upon, which is perhaps an important assumption, the already legendary ‘Epic Fury’ operation will be over,” the US president wrote on his Truth Social network.
But “if they don’t accept, the bombing will begin, and unfortunately, it will be at a much higher level and with a much greater intensity than before,” he warned, referring to the US-Israeli campaign that ran from February 28 to the ceasefire of April 8.
“Iran is still examining the American plan and proposal,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai stated, as quoted by the ISNA news agency.
Yesterday, the US president announced the suspension of the American “Freedom Project,” launched just 48 hours earlier to allow hundreds of ships trapped in the Gulf to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
For its part, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle will be prepositioned in the Gulf region, a “signal” that the coalition assembled by London and Paris is ready to secure the Strait of Hormuz, the reopening of which, according to the French presidency, must be independent of negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
