Following the overnight exchange of strikes between the US and Iran, the American military has reportedly begun returning tanker aircraft to the Middle East, previously deployed to Europe following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran. The aircraft are reportedly being relocated to facilities in the region, including bases in Israel.
Against this backdrop, Israel remains on high alert. Over the past 24 hours, Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir held a series of meetings to assess the operational situation with the leadership of Military Intelligence, the Air Force, and the IDF Operations Directorate. In addition, ongoing coordination was maintained with senior representatives of the US military command and the Pentagon. Earlier, retired Major General Itzhak Barik expressed the opinion that any possible development of the situation around Iran carries serious risks for Israel. He assessed that both a possible agreement between Washington and Tehran and a new round of large-scale military confrontation could ultimately lead to a strengthening of the Islamic Republic’s position.
A senior US administration official said discussions are continuing in Washington about further action against Iran. According to him, the country’s leadership is considering various options for the development of events after the recent series of strikes, which, it is claimed, jeopardized the future of the memorandum of understanding between the two countries.
At the same time, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that US President Donald Trump officially announced the termination of the agreement signed in Islamabad.
The publication asserts that Washington’s decision was merely a formal confirmation that the agreement had effectively expired much earlier. The authors of the article believe the agreement was doomed from the start, since, in their view, the United States failed to fulfill its obligations.
In this regard, the agency stated that the announcement of the document’s termination merely formally confirmed its effective end. It also asserted that Iran’s continued participation in the agreement, which, according to the authors, Trump has already officially declared invalid, is devoid of practical meaning. In this regard, calls were made for the Iranian authorities to finally abandon the document and thereby send an unambiguous political signal to Washington about the termination of any obligations under this agreement.
