The Australian Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan argues neither Washington nor Tehran can afford to back down over the Strait of Hormuz, warning the standoff will test whether Iran’s endurance outlasts US President Donald Trump’s resolve.
“Neither America nor Iran can compromise,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“Iran won’t give up control of the Strait of Hormuz, and it believes it can withstand any punishment that America will mete out to it.
“Trump or Washington, for its part, cannot allow Iran to continue to control the Strait of Hormuz because that means strategically, we’re in a worse position than we were before the whole war erupted.
“Does Iran run out of endurance before Trump runs out of conviction?”
