To assert its hegemony over the Muslim world, the Islamic Republic of Iran, initially isolated, made the struggle against Israel one of its major objectives. fighting. For over forty years, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been implementing this strategy by financing a network of militias across the Middle East.
In 2019, the United States, a major target of the IRGC, designated it a terrorist organization, at a time when Iran was already facing a barrage of economic sanctions. Isolated from the international financial system, the IRGC has built a complex mechanism to circumvent sanctions, allowing it to continue exporting its oil and supporting militias in the region. Meanwhile, within Iran, where poverty is on the rise, the IRGC’s authority is being challenged, but its bloody repression has been used to quell uprisings. Hamas’s attacks against Israel on October 7, 2023, have now led to the collapse or paralysis of historical allies like Hezbollah. Since the bombings of June 13, Iran, already weakened, now appears to be engaged in an unwanted war against Israel, which has already resulted in the deaths of some of its most senior “guardians.”
