The government has summoned Iran’s ambassador after a Swedish citizen was executed in Iran. At the same time, criticism of the regime is growing – and the question of how Sweden should act is being brought to the forefront.
A Swedish citizen was executed in Iran on Wednesday morning. The person was arrested in June 2025 and became a Swedish citizen in 2019 after coming to Sweden in 2015. Swedish authorities have long demanded his release and that the death penalty be abolished, but to no avail. Iran has not recognized Swedish citizenship, which has severely limited Sweden’s ability to act. The government has made sharp protests and relations between the countries are described as strained.
Security policy analyst Johan Westerholm describes the execution as part of a larger pattern.
– It is a mark against the West as a whole, you could say. Now we are all executing, says Johan Westerholm, security policy analyst and former intelligence officer.
