The SunIran has vowed to attack US forces after Donald Trump announced plans to deploy 15,000 troops and 100 aircraft to free stranded ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president warned Iran they would be “dealt with forcefully” if anyone tried to sabotage his plan to guide vessels through the key waterway – an operation he dubbed “Project Freedom”. It comes as Tehran maintains its chokehold on the shipping lane – a passage for one fifth of the oil – which has also seen a US blockade over the last few weeks. Trump said on Truth Social: “For the good of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways.”
He added that the process was called Project Freedom and would start on “Monday morning, Middle East time”. The US president claimed his actions were a “humanitarian gesture” aimed at freeing people who had “done absolutely nothing wrong”.
