President Donald Trump has said that the US will retrieve Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. Iran is believed to possess about 408kgs of highly enriched uranium, which Trump says was buried by US and Israeli airstrikes nearly a year ago. The uranium in question is enriched to 60 per cent – way above levels for civilian usage but slightly below weapons-grade. That material, if further refined to 90 per cent, would theoretically be sufficient to produce more than nine nuclear bombs. Retrieving the uranium is part of Trump’s central objective of his war on Iran that Tehran will not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
