Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday the U.S. is “serious about our sanctions” on countries and financial institutions helping Iran. Rubio was responding to a question by PBS News White House Correspondent Liz Landers, who asked whether his earlier comments that the Treasury Department would sanction foreign financial institutions “enables Iran’s sanctions evasion,” included Chinese banks.
Rubio said he did not have any announcements on new sanctions, but he added that the U.S. would enforce its sanctions. “Sanctions don’t mean anything unless you know you’re going to do something about them,” Rubio said. The White House briefing came a day after the U.S. announced the launch of Project Freedom, a new effort to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping traffic.
