Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, occurring just days after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the United States. Military officials in Iran state that the decision was made in response to Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s civil defence reports that at least 16 people were killed in an Israeli drone strike in the southern region of the country.
Despite the escalation, officials have confirmed that negotiators are still expected to travel to Switzerland for peace talks with the United States. US Vice President JD Vance spoke to Fox News on this escalation. “A lot of the criticisms of the deal have really underappreciated is that the United States has all the cards,” Mr Vance said.
