The United States is expressing optimism that a deal to open the Strait of Hormuz could be around the corner, creating an avenue towards de-escalation.
But it might not be the deal Donald Trump wants and could result in a new era of Iranian strength in a region that’s been working to defang the regime.
“This is a major setback from the day before the war started. So bottom line up front, it would be a significant loss to the United States and to the world if Iran were to maintain some kind of control over the strait,” Retired Maj.-Gen. Randy Manner said.
