U.S. Vice President JD Vance has chimed in about his thoughts on recent comments from Pope Leo condemning the Trump administration for fuelling the ongoing war in Iran. “I think it’s very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology,”
Vance said at a Turning Point USA event in Georgia on Tuesday. After appealing for peace from the U.S. last week, Pope Leo was met with harsh criticism from President Donald Trump. The pontiff clarified his comments on Monday, saying they were “certainly not meant as attacks on anyone,” but rather “the message of the Gospel [peace].”
Vance expressed appreciation that Pope Leo is “an advocate for peace,” but questioned the Holy Father’s sentiment that, as Vance put, “God is never on the side of those who wield the sword.” “Was God on the side of the Americans who liberated France from the Nazis?” Vance questioned, before an audience member heckled him for “killing children” amid the ongoing war.
