As the U.S.-Israel war with Iran enters its fourth week, President Donald Trump has issued a 48-hour deadline for Iran to full reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face the destruction of its power plants. Global’s Jazan Grewal is joined by Jack Cunningham, a professor of international relations at the University of Toronto, to discuss the escalation, including Saturday’s Iranian missile strikes on the southern Israeli towns of Dimona and Arad. “I think it signals desperation on Trump’s part,” Cunningham said regarding the recent threats. “He has threatened to take out Iran’s power system but Tehran has responded by threatening further damage to energy infrastructure in the Gulf region that would prolong the economic impact of the conflict, it would do more damage that would spook the markets even further.” Iran’s death toll in the war surpassed 1,500 on Saturday, state media reported, citing the ministry. In Israel, 15 people have been killed by Iranian strikes.
