The United States and Iran have both agreed to a two-week ceasefire, only hours after US President Donald Trump threatened to wipe out “a whole civilisation”. Pakistan was a key player in the negotiations, urging Mr Trump to postpone the attacks he threatened on Iran’s civilian infrastructure. But another mediator could have played a bigger role in Iran ceasing its bombing operation. Natasha Lindstaedt is a Professor of Government at the University of Essex and joined The World’s Girish Sawlani to discuss why Iran accepted the temporary offer and how China’s involvement may have been key to the truce.
