Iran announced on Monday that it had opened fire on a US naval vessel as Washington began efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. The semi-official Fars News Agency, which is closely associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, first reported that an unidentified American ship had been struck by two missiles near the port of Jask after it allegedly ignored warnings to stop. However, United States Central Command rejected the claim on social media, stating on X that no U.S. Navy vessels had been hit, and that American forces are continuing to support “Project Freedom” while enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Since the outbreak of fighting on February 28, Iran has repeatedly asserted that it successfully targeted U.S. naval vessels. For example, in March it even claimed that the USS Abraham Lincoln had been struck. However, United States Central Command dismissed that assertion at the time, saying the missiles fired in that incident “didn’t even come close” to the ship.
